What is Acupuncture?

This ancient system of healing treats the whole person.  It supports the physical body and also addresses each person’s mental, emotional and spiritual well being.  Acupuncture is the oldest continually practiced system of medicine in the world; it is used by one-third of the world’s population as a primary healthcare system.  Proven effective over thousands of years, it is a system of preventive, acute and chronic health care based on an understanding of the natural laws influencing the movement of energy in nature and in the human body.

The life force, called chi, flows through the body in channels like rivers flowing through the earth. When the energy in the body is adequate and moving properly, one feels vibrant.  When it is blocked or deficient, symptoms of illness or pain appear.  Physical and emotional trauma, stress, lack of exercise, and poor diet are among the many things that can influence the quality, quantity and movement of chi.

In my practice, I seek to identify the underlying root causes of illness rather than merely attempt to eliminate or suppress symptoms.  Health education is an integral part of each visit. I encourage self-responsibility and emphasize the prevention of disease through lifestyle choices, nutrition and health practices. Observing subtle patterns, enhancing body awareness and waking up to making conscious choices are some of the goals on the journey to vibrant health. The emphasis is on creating a total wellness plan unique to each person.
